Deadly New Hampshire motorcycle crash has ties to Texas

On Behalf of | Jun 28, 2019 | Motorcycle Accidents

Motorcyclists and veterans around the nation were grieving one of the deadliest motorcycle wrecks in recent history after a pickup truck crashed into a convoy of bikers in New Hampshire, killing seven and injuring others. The riders, men and women alike, were all members of a motorcycle club called the Marine Jarheads MC.

In the aftermath of the accident, it was discovered that the 23-year-old Massachusetts truck driver who plowed into the bikers after he crossed a double-yellow highway line in a rural area had a “long list of traffic infractions.” In addition to a drunk driving charge in 2013 when he was still a teenager, he was arrested once in February in Texas after police found him in possession of a crack pipe. He later flipped his truck in Texas in June while allegedly attempting to swerve around another car.

On top of that, the young driver had been stopped by police for suspected drunk driving in Connecticut just in May. He had refused chemical testing but police had sent him to a local hospital for mental health treatment because he was behaving erratically and expressing suicidal thoughts.

At least one of those two incidents should have kept him off the road, but officials at the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles failed to follow up on the information they had been forwarded from other states. The failure ultimately prompted the head of that department to tender her resignation.

A motorcycle is absolutely no match for any kind of vehicle on the road, especially a truck. This kind of accident illustrates the tragedy that can happen when irresponsible and dangerous drivers get behind the wheel of a vehicle, and the system of checks that are supposed to be in place to stop them from driving all fail.
