A study published by Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Center for Injury Research and Policy in 2018 shows that over 2.2 million kids ranging in age from 5 to 17 were seen in emergency rooms (ER) in the U.S. in between 2006 and 2015. National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) data shows that many of those kids were seen in the ER after getting hurt while out riding their bikes.

NEISS data show that the rates of bicycle-related crashes declined by as much as 30% during the 10 years between 2006 and 2015. Even still, those same statistics show that as many as 600 kids required medical attention each day during that decade-long period.

That same data show that 46% of the child patients belonged to the 10- to 14-year-old demographic. At least 72% of the ER patients were boys.

The data also reveals that at least 23% of the patients who were seen had cuts. Another 29% has scrapes and bruises. Only 11% of those children who were seen in ERs during that time frame were diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries. This was the most common injury among that 10- to 14-year-old demographic. Many were caused by them not wearing helmets.

Other common injuries that kids presented with at the ER included face, arm, head and neck and leg injuries at 15, 36, 15 and 25% respectively.

Bicycle accidents are all too common in Austin and across the state of Texas. There are many reasons that they occur. You should seek out medical attention if you’re hurt in a crash. It’s important that you consult with an attorney after an accident to learn what the next steps are that you should take in your case.
