Teenage drivers have a higher risk of becoming involved in an accident for several reasons. First, their lack of experience can lead them to make mistakes when dealing with a complex or stressful situation. Second, teens are statistically more likely to engage in risky behavior than adults in general. Third, teens may be influenced by the actions of friends and could be more susceptible to peer pressure regarding things like drunk driving and speeding.
If you are a parent of a teenage driver, you must do your part in helping them to stay safe on the roads. The following are some things you can do to influence them for the better.
Make them aware of the risks
Your children should be educated on the risks that they face every time they get behind the wheel. Make sure that they are aware of certain statistics, for example, that those aged between 16 and 19 are four times as likely to be involved in fatal accidents as drivers aged between 25 and 29.
Set standards for their driving activities
As a parent, you can set certain boundaries and rules for your child’s driving activities, especially if you are helping to fund their vehicle. You could set limits to the amount of time your child can spend driving at night and limit the number of people allowed in the vehicle at one time.
If you are concerned about your teenage child’s safety when driving, you should make sure that they are aware of the legal consequences of unsafe driving as well as the risks to their safety.
