The most dangerous types of distracted driving

On Behalf of | Nov 29, 2019 | Car Accidents

Distracted driving is being exposed as one of the most troublesome causes of car accidents. Distracted driving is completely preventable, but in our fast-paced, stressful lives, driving while distracted is unfortunately very common.

If you have recently been involved in a car accident that caused damages and the cause has not yet been established, you may want to consider whether distracted driving was potentially the reason why the collision occurred. The following are the three main types of distracted driving.

Visual distractions

All drivers need to have their eyes on the road to drive safely. If a person is visually distracted, it may be that the sun is in their eyes, or that they are looking at their phone or another person in the car. In this situation, driving can become very dangerous, because the driver will be unable to react to the hazards on the road.

Manual distractions

Having both hands on the wheel at all times means that drivers can respond quickly to an unexpected situation. Even if a driver’s eyes are on the road, using their hands to eat or smoke can prevent them from rapidly reacting when they need to.

Cognitive distractions

Cognitive distractions are difficult to prove because they take place only in the mind. However, if a person caused an accident after they had an upsetting argument or were grieving a loss, you may be able to suggest that they were engaging in cognitive distraction.

It is important to work to uncover the true cause of the accident you were involved in. By doing so, you will be able to gain the damages that you deserve.
