No experience can compare to a long drive on Texas roads under a big, summer sky. People countrywide take road trips through the Lone Star State during summer, but not without risk.
Starting at Memorial Day and ending at Labor Day, auto experts refer to these summer weeks as the “100 Deadliest Days.” This period marks a significant increase in road traffic and, consequently, traffic fatalities.
Teenage drivers are at a greater risk
Recent data published by the American Automobile Association (AAA) reveals that from 2008 to 2018, more than 8,300 people died in car crashes involving teen drivers. At a rate that exceeds seven people every day, experts worry that closing schools and a lack of available jobs may put more teens at risk during the 100 Deadliest Days.
The AAA study reports that of those 8,300 casualties, 750 people died on Texas roadways. Many AAA officials believe that number to increase in 2020. Dr. David Yang, executive director of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, says that “new teen drivers… are three times more likely to be involved in a deadly crash.” A survey of drivers aged 16 to 18 revealed that 70% of them have engaged in one of these risky driving behaviors:
- Driving over the speed limit on a residential street
- Texting while driving
- Driving without a seatbelt
- Running a red light
- Driving aggressively
- Driving while drowsy
To curb these trends, AAA believes parents can help the most. Director of State Relations for AAA, Jennifer Ryan, recommends that parents can:
- talk with teens about refraining from risky behaviors like speeding and impaired driving;
- teach by example by practicing safe driving habits themselves;
- establish a parent/teen agreement that sets family rules and expectations;
- and conduct 50 hours of supervised driving with the teen.
